Roll to Roll Web Coating Application

One of the advantages of PVD coating systems is that they can be integrated with roll-to-roll web coating technology, which is a method that continuously coats a flexible substrate material as it moves through a series of rollers in a vacuum chamber. Roll-to-roll web coating technology can enable large-scale and high-speed production of thin film products with uniform and precise coatings. Roll-to-roll web coating technology can also reduce material waste and energy consumption compared to other coating methods.

Thick Cu film coating accounts for 80% share of PVD deposition process implemented with chambers produced by our partners from China. This means that most of the PVD coating systems in production are operating for thick Cu film high volume production according to DST's Chinese partners, who have extensive experience and expertise in this field. These system manufacturers can provide high-quality and cost-effective PVD coating systems that can meet industrial end-users' production needs and specifications

The roll-to-roll web coating technology works by unwinding the substrate material from a supply roll and feeding it into the vacuum chamber. The substrate material passes through one or more coating stations, where the coating material is deposited on its surface by magnetron sputtering technology or others combined. The coated substrate material then exits the vacuum chamber and is wound onto a take-up roll. The coating thickness, uniformity, and quality are controlled by various parameters, such as vacuum pressure, temperature, speed, sputtering power, and gas flow.

The roll-to-roll web coating technology has many advantages, such as large-scale and high-speed production, low material waste and energy consumption, and high flexibility and versatility. The roll-to-roll web coating technology can be used for various applications, such as optical filters, solar cells, flexible electronics, packaging films, and anti-reflective coatings.
